Two Chicago choral groups announce their schedules

Two Chicago professional choral ensembles have announced their 2013-14 seasons.

The versatile vocal group Chicago a cappella will launch its third decade with a look back at the diverse repertory that has been its trademark for the previous 20 years. Founder and artistic director Jonathan Miller will serve as music director for a retrospective program that will include a new commission from composer Paul Crabtree, “The Windhover.” Concert dates are Oct. 12-19.

The season continues with “Holidays a cappella,” with Anne Heider as guest music director, Dec. 1-14; “Melodic Migrations,” a program of Jewish a cappella music from around the world, directed by Miller, Feb. 15-23; and “The Birth of Gospel,” tracing the evolution of gospel music from its Chicago roots to the present, directed by Rollo Dilworth, April 11-19.

Another admired local chamber choir, Bella Voce, is beginning its 31st season with “Curse Upon Iron,” a program of works by the Baltic composers Veljo Tormis, Arvo Part, Einojuhani Rautavaara and others; dates are Oct. 5-6.

Artistic director Andrew Lewis also will conduct the group’s annual performances of Handel’s “Messiah,” presented in historically informed style with the period-instrument ensemble Callipygian Players, Nov. 23-24.

The Bella Voce season will continue with “Holiday Delights,” a seasonal program combining Renaissance classics and arrangements of familiar holiday works, Dec. 21-22; the debut of an offshoot chamber ensemble, Bella Voce Camerata, performing David Lang’s “The Little Match Girl Passion,” March 22-23; and an all-Renaissance program that holds music by Josquin and Ockeghem.

Concerts will be presented at churches in Chicago, River Forest, Evanston and Lisle; 877-755-6277; bellavoce.org.
