Intentionally cheap, intentionally cheesy and sure to be the object of fascination for insomniacs and pot smokers across the country, the locally made comedy variety series "Steve Gadlin's Star Makers" has been picked up for national TV syndication.
The show, which airs at 3 a.m. on the Weigel Broadcasting subchannel The U Too, is hosted by Steve Gadlin (a co-creator of the very funny annual talent show "Impress These Apes") and draws inspiration from "The Gong Show," as well as cable access shows from the 1970s and '80s. With a set that consists of little more than a drab black curtain as backdrop, it's about as low-rent as this sort of thing gets, which is part of the charm.
Also available online, starting next month it will air on stations in large cities including Los Angeles and San Franciso, as well as smaller markets such as Pago Pago, American Samoa.
"We’ve been a local band of weirdos for over 10 years now," Gadlin said in a press release. "Now we have a chance to delight and confuse all over the country. I can’t wait to see how we play in Pago Pago."
A sizzle reel online promises the show is "exactly the kind of obscure content that young male demos love to watch."
Though Gadlin is playing a character of sorts, the show's website promises that the actual talent portions are completely sincere.
"Presenting tomorrow's stars of Hollywood and/or Broadway," is the perfectly awkward tagline, featuring "enthusiastic performances of all talents, regardless of a person’s experience or skill level," per the website. "It seeks to knock down the pedestal of celebrity, and give all performers do the thing they love in front of a television audience – to fly their freak flag, if you will."
